White Toad Stools

Location:  In Wahweap Creek canyon.  There are two ways, if the law allows.  From Page, AZ, go northwest into Utah on highway 89 to Big Water.  Check with the BLM about access.  There is access from 89 by taking Ethan Allen road at Big Water, north a short distance to Fish Hatchery Road.  Go northwest to the road’s end and hike to:

Find the location: Copy the coordinates below. Open Google Earth, paste the coordinates into "Fly To" and click on the magnifying glass.

37° 09' 43.10" N
111° 42' 45.57" W

This route leaves about a 8 mile RT hike as we understand it.

A shorter hike is an option if still legal.  Take Highway 89 west from Page. Turn north on Cottonwood Canyon Road at:

37° 06' 17.66" N
111° 50' 48.37" W

Turn east at:

37° 07' 27.65" N
111° 51' 17.00" W

Head to the road's end at:

37° 10' 34.59" N
111° 42' 54.59" W

This is long drive, but a short (2 mi RT) walk southeast down Wahweap Creek Canyon.  CAUTION:  This route may no longer be legal and there are no services along this road.  Talk with the BLM before proceeding. These are very rough directions and it may not be legal to use that route now. These directions are to give you a rough idea, but he BLM can advise you further.

Equipment:  Hasselblad C501 with 50 mm lens and polarizing filter.  Velvia transparency film, ISO 50.

Digital imaging/manipulation:  Image scanned with Minolta Dimage Scan Multi PRO at 4800 dpi.  Emulsion artifact removed.  Sky replaced with one I liked better.

Notes: Due to the high contrast, incorrect exposure is common with film. Often you need to increase the exposure if your meter over reads the exposure. Digital photography makes it easier to catch that. Early morning photos appear to be better.
