Salt Ponds - San Francisco Bay 2012 a

Location: On final approach to SFO you come over the south end of the San Francisco Bay about 4 minutes before landing. Since there are other approaches its a matter of traffic, weather, and luck.

Find the location: Copy the coordinates below. Open Google Earth, paste the coordinates into "Fly To" and click on the magnifying glass.

37° 30' 23.64" N
122° 01' 57.70" W

Equipment: Equipment:  Canon SD970 6.6-33mm (at 6.6mm). Setting: 1/200 sec, f 9.0, ISO 80.

Digital imaging/manipulation: Yup, this one has been worked a bit. Photoshop 5.0 removed reflections from the plane window. It was tonemapped in Photomatrix 4.0 to increase color saturation since it was taken on a grey day with light fog.

Notes: From what I read, these are salt evaporation ponds. The colors are determined by salinity and the presence of algae and brine shrimp.
